Mesotherapy

What is mesotherapy?

Mesotherapy is a technique that uses injections of vitamins, enzymes, hormones, and plant extracts to rejuvenate and tighten skin, as well as remove excess fat.

Michel Pistor, a doctor in France, developed the technique in 1952. It was originally used to relieve pain. In the years since, it has gained popularity in the United States and other parts of the world.

Today, mesotherapy is used to:

  • remove fat in areas like the stomach, thighs, buttocks, hips, legs, arms, and face
  • reduce cellulite
  • fade wrinkles and lines
  • tighten loose skin
  • recontour the body
  • lighten pigmented skin
  • treat alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss

The technique uses very fine needles to deliver a series of injections into the middle layer (mesoderm) of skin. The idea behind mesotherapy is that it corrects underlying issues like poor circulation and inflammation that cause skin damage.

There isn’t a standard formula for the substances injected in mesotherapy. Doctors use many different solutions, including:

  • prescription medicines like vasodilators and antibiotics
  • hormones such as calcitonin and thyroxin
  • enzymes like collagenase and hyaluronidase
  • herbal extracts
  • vitamins and minerals

How is mesotherapy done?

Mesotherapy is performed using very fine needles injecting some special solutions to the middle layer of the skin in the relevant area. It is a treatment for the damage on the skin and the regulation of the weakened blood circulation. The content of the solutions depends on the application area, application purpose, age of the person and many other factors such as the substances that the person needs (personal vitamins, amino acids and minerals).

How is mesotherapy applied?

Before the mesotherapy application, a physical examination is performed first. After the physical examination of the patient, a definite diagnosis is made regarding whatever discomfort the patient has. After finalization, an anesthetic cream can be applied to the application area on the person. Disposable needles are used for each patient and the solutions which are deemed suitable for the patient are applied to the area. It can sometimes be applied using a mechanical gun to make the process of injection easy in the area where the application will be made frequently. An angled injection is done by the physician to the middle layer of the skin in the area where the treatment is needed. Very small amounts of solution is injected into this area of injection. More mesotherapy sessions can be done according to the need of the particular area of skin. It is a outpatient treatment method that does not require dressing after the application. If no side effects occur, the patient can easily continue his normal life after the application.

How does mesotherapy work?

Mesotherapy is one of the very popular aesthetic procedures. Before applying the mesotherapy process, the needs, age and health condition of the person are checked on basis of which the suitable substances such as amino acids, enzymes, hormones, minerals, vitamins, antioxidants and hyaluronic acid are prepared. These prepared substances are applied to the skin where it is needed with the mesotherapy process. These substances which are applied to the skin tissue stimulate the structures called collagen and elastin that keep the skin alive and tight. These stimulated structures accelerate the blood circulation in the area applied and provide the regulation of the immune response and circulation in the lymphatic system. All these things together provide skin renewal. Subcutaneous tissue is repaired and thus the loosened tissues regain their old firmness and rejuvenation is provided. The results and success rates vary depending on factors such as the number of sessions, the correct ratio of injected substances and the person himself.

Most patients feel mild discomfort. The needles are fine, and a numbing cream can be used to reduce any pain.

Usually, 3 to 5 sessions for skin rejuvenation and more for fat reduction, spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart.

Minimal downtime; slight redness, swelling, or bruising may occur but typically resolves within a few days.

Results can last several months, but maintenance sessions may be needed to prolong the effects.

Common side effects include redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection sites, which usually fade quickly.
